YOUTH SERVICE CENTER
The Youth Service Center is located at 141 W. Somerset and offers programs out of The Lighthouse Athletic Field located at Front & Erie Ave. (The Lighthouse Athletic Field is a unique 15.5 acre green space in the middle of urban North Philadelphia containing 7 baseball diamonds and open space for the play of other sports and as a site for hosting large public special events).
The Youth Center programs provide a variety of educational, occupational, cultural, sports and recreational and leadership development opportunities to thousands of children and youth and their families on an annual basis.
- The After School Program (3-6PM) serves young people from 5 to 13 years old and offers individualized tutoring, homework assistance, cultural and recreational activities from September to June.
- The Evening Recreational Program runs year-round from 4-9pm and offers sports, health and fitness, arts, cultural and social/recreational, educational activities, leadership development and prevention workshops for children, youth and their families ages 6-21.
- The Lighthouse Baseball Program serves hundreds of boys and girls ages 5-18 through traveling teams and an in-house league (program runs May-September).
- The Lighthouse Summer Day Camp offers an 8-week theme based program serving young people ages 5-13. The Camp's hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-6:00pm and includes a multi-disciplinary program approach to education, the arts, learning through themed related field trips, fitness, character building, health, nutrition and prevention education and a variety of other educational, recreational and cultural activities.
- The Youth Service Center also runs a boys and girls basketball program, volleyball, cheerleading, boxing, fitness, swimming and other sports recreational classes, teams and programs.
- In addition, the Youth Service Center runs an Adult Basketball league program, which operates 9pm to 12am.
- The Center also serves as host site to community-wide meetings, celebrations, cultural presentations, Youth Dance-Jams and special events and to other after-school and summer programs such as The Mural Arts Big Picture Program of the City of Philadelphia, the GREAT Program of the Philadelphia Police Department and the Sisters in Science Program.
The Youth Service Center houses a gym-performance space, workout/fitness center, boxing center, classrooms, on-line computer lab, dance and visual arts studios, a reading center/library, kitchen and dinning room facilities, game room/pool hall and an in-door swimming pool. Most of these programs include a free nutritional meals component and all the Youth Services programs utilize a comprehensive program strategy that integrates health, nutrition and character building education into its activities.
