THE LIGHTHOUSE FAMILY SCHOOL

The Lighthouse Family School has been providing quality early childhood educational services to the community since 1972. The Lighthouse Family School is a Nationally Accredited Day Care Head Start Program, which provides service to children ages 12 months to 5 years old accepting DPW and subsidized payments. Head Start/Day Care services include a multi-cultural/bilingual (Spanish/English) curriculum, child health and early childhood development, safety, nutrition, mental health, early intervention, educational field trips and reading readiness/language development services. The Family School serves breakfast, lunch and snack and provides before and after school care. The Family School also includes a strong parental involvement and support program component, a family library program and organizes a variety of family oriented events and special activities that celebrate the accomplishments of the young students throughout the year.

The Family School also operates The Lighthouse Beacon Food Share Program. Free groceries are distributed to needy families and senior citizens on a regular basis. Clothes are also distributed on occasion. The Beacon Program also distributes holiday packages and organizes on-going educational workshops and special events for the community. More Details

YOUTH SERVICE CENTER

The Youth Service Center is located at 141 W. Somerset and offers programs out of The Lighthouse Athletic Field located at Front & Erie Ave. (The Lighthouse Athletic Field is a unique 15.5 acre green space in the middle of urban North Philadelphia containing 7 baseball diamonds and open space for the play of other sports and as a site for hosting large public special events).

The Youth Center programs provide a variety of educational, occupational, cultural, sports and recreational and leadership development opportunities to thousands of children and youth and their families on an annual basis.

  • The After School Program (3-6PM) serves young people from 5 to 13 years old and offers individualized tutoring, homework assistance, cultural and recreational activities from September to June.
  • The Evening Recreational Program runs year-round from 4-9pm and offers sports, health and fitness, arts, cultural and social/recreational, educational activities, leadership development and prevention workshops for children, youth and their families ages 6-21.
  • The Lighthouse Baseball Program serves hundreds of boys and girls ages 5-18 through traveling teams and an in-house league (program runs May-September).
  • The Lighthouse Summer Day Camp offers an 8-week theme based program serving young people ages 5-13. The Camp's hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-6:00pm and includes a multi-disciplinary program approach to education, the arts, learning through themed related field trips, fitness, character building, health, nutrition and prevention education and a variety of other educational, recreational and cultural activities.
  • The Youth Service Center also runs a boys and girls basketball program, volleyball, cheerleading, boxing, fitness, swimming and other sports recreational classes, teams and programs.
  • In addition, the Youth Service Center runs an Adult Basketball league program, which operates 9pm to 12am.
  • The Center also serves as host site to community-wide meetings, celebrations, cultural presentations, Youth Dance-Jams and special events and to other after-school and summer programs such as The Mural Arts Big Picture Program of the City of Philadelphia, the GREAT Program of the Philadelphia Police Department and the Sisters in Science Program.

The Youth Service Center houses a gym-performance space, workout/fitness center, boxing center, classrooms, on-line computer lab, dance and visual arts studios, a reading center/library, kitchen and dinning room facilities, game room/pool hall and an in-door swimming pool. Most of these programs include a free nutritional meals component and all the Youth Services programs utilize a comprehensive program strategy that integrates health, nutrition and character building education into its activities. ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Lighthouse Adult Education Program offers GED, Pre-GED, multi-levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes in both English and Spanish to over 1,500 adult learners on an annual basis. Support services include counseling and educational, cultural and life skills development workshops. The program also includes an annual graduation ceremony and on-going student achievement recognition activities, class trips and other special events. All adults 18 and older are eligible for day, afternoon or evening classes. There are fall, spring and summer sessions. Our partners in this area of our Adult Education programs are Community College of Philadelphia, Lutheran Settlement House and the Center for Literacy. The Educational Opportunity Center offers free continuing educational assistance services to adult learners from their office located at The Lighthouse Lehigh Avenue Building.

The Adult Education Program also strives to address other important needs of adult learners in The Lighthouse service community by offering language arts classes, life skills, parenting and economic development educational programs and by building partnerships with other organizations in order to offer adults continuing life-long learning opportunities. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Economic Development Program was established in 1981 and works toward the revitalization of the economy of Eastern North Philadelphia and Kensington. The program's efforts focus on the neighborhoods that comprise the city, state and federally designated American Street Enterprise and Empowerment Zone. The Economic Development Program is composed of the following components:

  1. The Job Resource Center strives to assist local residents in finding employment and/or training to meet their needs not only with local businesses but also with businesses in the tri-state area. An annual Job Fair attracts over 30 employers and over 500 job seekers.
  2. The Business Services Center assists retail and commercial businesses with city services, government and private financing, licenses, identify rental and property sale opportunities and provides various other technical assistance needs to business owners.
  3. The Business Rental Rebate Program serves new or expanding businesses located in the American Street Empowerment Zone. Over 80 local businesses have been supported by this program since 1996.
  4. The Economic Development Program also works to develop creative initiatives and partnerships that will support the economic stability of The Lighthouse programs and its surrounding community.

TEEN PARENTING (TPEEP)

The Teen Parenting Education and Employment Program provide supports to older teens to bridge the gap between the world of the classroom, parenting and the world of work. The students take GED, computer technology, life skills, parenting, physical education, arts classes and participate in financial literacy, health and nutrition and a variety of empowerment workshops. This six month full day program also includes family activities, trips and an eight week job search component. An annual prom and graduation ceremony celebrates the accomplishments of the young mothers. The program seeks to empower young mothers, between the ages of 18 and 21 currently living on public assistance, towards independence. More Details

PYRAMID PROGRAM FOR TEEN PARENTS

This program works with teen parents of all ages (13-19) to comprehensively strengthen their capacity to maintain family unity, stability, safety and healthy growth. Program participants receive supportive services, counseling, educational support, participate in life and parenting skills classes and are actively engaged in a wide variety of family unification, educational, social and cultural events and activities. The program runs in 16 week cycles and operates as a "rites of passage" experience for teen parents (both male and female). Family members, friends and other service providers are engaged in the program activities in order to provide the young parents with the necessary supports to achieve success and properly care for their child/children.
